Why Exercise is Good for Your Physical and Mental Health

We all know that exercise is good for your health. There have been many studies and physical evidence that proves that exercise can help you lose weight, decrease susceptibility to diabetes and heart disease, and increase muscle and energy. But there are even more positive effects that exercise can have on your physical and mental wellness. 

3 Physical Health Benefits You Get from Regular Exercise 

  1. Reduce risk of chronic disease. Chronic disease is primarily caused by a lack of exercise. Regular exercise can help your blood flow, which improves cardiac health and lowers blood pressure. Any doctor will tell a patient that is suffering from signs of these things to regularly exercise 2-3 times a week.
  2. Reduces pain – Some people suffer from chronic pain for many different reasons, and it can really interrupt their lives. With regular exercise, you can actually decrease pain. Strengthening your muscles and bones, will help your core support the rest of your body. In essence, giving you back the building blocks to fight pain from weakness. “Additionally, physical activity can also raise pain tolerance and decrease pain perception.” 1 
  3. Helps with skin health – “Oxidative stress occurs when the body’s antioxidant defenses cannot completely repair the damage that free radicals cause to cells. This can damage their internal structures and deteriorate your skin.” 1 Regular exercise can get the flow of oxygen moving through your body and help your skin become more vibrant and prevent blemishes.

  1. Boosts happy chemicals. “Exercise releases endorphins, which create feelings of happiness and euphoria.” 2 When battling depression or just the regular blues, exercise has been proven to help increase happiness and get you out of the dumps. Running that mile may seem overwhelming and hard, but you’ll ultimately feel much better when you’re done! 
  2. Helps your brain stay young. As we get older, our brains actually start to shrink and lose some cognitive function. Diseases such as Alzheimer’s can’t be cured, but they can be delayed with regular exercise. Regular exercise “boosts the chemicals in the brain that support and prevent degeneration of the hippocampus, an important part of the brain for memory and learning.” 2 So if nothing else, exercise so you can kick it with the youngsters for a little longer. 
  3. Alleviates anxiety. You may have already heard this, but it’s important to highlight. Anxiety has been on the rise and affects over 40 million adults nationwide. 2 Again, exercise can’t cure anxiety, but it can make a big difference. With treatment and regular exercise, you can find yourself ready to take on the day, every day.
